Racking Solutions

Warehouse by Design supplies a variety of racking systems that can be designed to suit your warehouse storage and supply needs.

Warehouse by Design is a major NSW distributor of ColbyRACK pallet racking. Colby has been providing the industry with pallet racking and warehouse storage solutions for over 50 years. In those years colby has demonstrated their product to be; reliable, strong and safe. Colby racking components are designed and manufactured in Australia at their factory located in the north of Sydney.

Selective Pallet Racking

Maximum storage flexibility and versatility.

Selective Pallet Racking is the lowest cost pallet racking solution, ideal for warehouse racks where flexibility, access, and speed of operation are the main objectives. By storing pallets single-deep, operators are able to get to any pallet at any time, without needing to shuffle stock around. This saves you time, and is great for applications where you hold only a few pallets per item. Selective racking is also the ideal solution if space is limited and you only have a few pallets that you need to get off the floor.

Selective Pallet Racking can be easily adjusted or relocated at any time, or even added to if you have space.

Double Deep Pallet Racking

Storing pallets two deep for better capacity.

Double Deep Pallet Racking is the best compromise between a selective and high-density pallet racking system. For businesses where both storage volume and selectivity is key, double-deep pallet racking may be the solution to the puzzle. By storing pallets two deep, higher storage density can be achieved, while operators are still able to access stock easily and relatively quickly.

Double Deep Pallet Racking is used in conjunction with special forklifts, often fitted with a pantograph mechanism specially designed to reach the second pallet location.

Double Deep Pallet Racking can be easily adjusted or relocated at any time, or even added to if you have space.

Narrow Aisle Pallet Racking

Making better use of space, while maintaining selectivity.

Narrow Aisle Pallet Racking is conventional selective pallet racking configured with narrower aisles that can be used with a specially designed turret truck. While these trucks are often more expensive than standard forklifts, using narrow aisles can give you major savings on building costs by allowing you to store more in less space, and gives option for automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS).

Narrow Aisle Racking is ideal for lower-throughput items and bulk reserve storage within high-bay applications.

Drive-In Pallet Racking

Drive-in Pallet Racking is the most popular form of high-density pallet racking, and is a more affordable option than some other alternatives.

By using ledges instead of beams, forklifts are able to drive into empty rack locations, which makes the storage of multi-deep pallets possible. This is a great solution for situations where selectivity isn’t a necessity. Providing excellent storage capacity, Colby Drive-in Pallet Racking works on the first pallet in, last pallet out (FILA) principle.

Suitable for large quantities of the same product and designed to ensure optimal performance at the lowest cost per footprint, our Drive-In Pallet Racking comes with a host of benefits.

Heavy-duty bracing connects symmetrically to the upright drive-in rack, which increases the strength and load-carrying capacity of the racking, while reducing the amount of bracing required.

Colby’s Drive-in Pallet Racking systems include innovative, one-piece, formed cantilever brackets that wrap securely around the upright.

Backstops are positioned at the end of the pallet runners to prevent pallets from being pushed too far into the racking, eliminating potential damage to spine bracing and further increasing safety.

Heavy-duty, purpose-designed floor channels help to guide forklifts into Drive-In Pallet Racking bays, ensuring quick and easy alignment, safer handling, and reduced risk of rack damage. For added protection, Colby Protect-a-Rack wraps around the base of the racking uprights. Their angled profile deflects impacts, minimises damage, and maximises clear bay entry.

Push-Back Pallet Racking

Dense storage with front loading and unloading

Push-Back Pallet Racking from Colby allows for the storage of pallets up to six deep. Using a forklift, pallets are pushed back on inclined rails that are mounted inside the Push-Back Racking. As a pallet is removed, the one behind it will automatically move forward, taking over the front position.

The Benefits of Push-Back Pallet Racking

  • Excellent space utilisation
  • Ideal for bulk storage, order consolidation, and despatch
  • High density, allowing for the storage of up to four pallets deep
  • First pallet in, last pallet out approach

Push-Back Rack’s are a great alternative to double-deep or multiple-deep racking, as it allows for dense storage, while ensuring stock is easy to access.

Pallet Live Storage (PLS)

Automatic FIFO stock rotation

In Pallet Live Storage (PLS), pallets are stored on inclined tracks with rollers or wheels. As a pallet is removed, the one behind it in the racking rolls gently into its place, providing automatic stock rotation. Using the first in, first out (FIFO) principle, PLS allows faster handling and simplified pallet selection.

Replenishment occurs at the back of the system, allowing safe pedestrian access to stock whilst forklift operators continue in the next aisle, providing great OH&S benefits.

  • Ideal for food and perishable items
  • Eliminates the need for urgent pick face replenishment
  • Provides first in, first out stock rotation
  • Allows high density storage, multiple pallets deep
  • Increases safety for pickers by providing pedestrian-only aisles
  • Speed control provided for long lanes

As with any high-density storage system, long lane PLS can be a great solution for chilled or freezer environments, and can even reduce energy costs as lighting is only needed at the front and back of the rack.

Satellite Rack – Dematic Rapidrunner

Semi-automated, dynamic, and high-density storage at its best!

The Dematic RapidRunner is a Pallet Runner that runs up and down the lanes in a high-density, multiple-deep racking system with the sole purpose of transporting pallets from one end of the rack to other.

Our RapidRunner carts run on rails that have been specially designed by ColbyRACK, and can be moved between lanes and beam levels with a forklift.

The Benefits of Colby’s Pallet Runner

This state-of-the-art Satellite Racking System is capable of running up and down lanes, retrieving pallets and bringing them back to the front. This means that Colby’s RapidRunner will ensure denser storage and space-efficiency, while also increasing the productivity of forklift drivers, as they can perform other tasks while the RapidRunner is shuffling pallets into place.

The RapidRunner Satellite Racking System is the ideal solution for any application where high storage density is a must, and is particularly beneficial in chilled environments, such as freezers. The RapidRunner system is also ideal for buffering stock at shipping docks, prior to loading up trucks for delivery.

Suitable for either a first in/first out (FIFO) configuration, last in/first out (LIFO) configuration, or a combination of both, there are countless benefits to this Satellite Racking System.

  • High density, ideal for SKUs with high-stock levels
  • Allows better efficiency, freeing up forklift operators’ time
  • Used as FIFO, LIFO, or a combination of both

Mobile Pallet Racking

Mobile racking systems are a little different to most commercial racking solutions, as instead of being secured to the warehouse floor, the racks are mounted to electronically-powered mobile bases. These bases – often referred to as ‘bogies’ – run on special hot-rolled cast steel rails, which are securely attached to the concrete slab.

Each bogie is fitted with four direct-drive, low torque, high inertia motors that work to ensure an even and uniform drive. The bogies also feature structural protection devices to absorb any accidental impacts from forklifts. These protection devices also ensure the bogies protect the base and power cables, while also keeping the wheel units aligned correctly and moving in the same direction.

Safety Features of our Mobile Racking Systems

Mobile racking systems are equipped with numerous light sensors, which ensure the mobile racks can only be operated when the aisles are completely clear of materials, handling equipment, people, and stock.

Other integral safety features include:

  • Trip bars, which when activated cut the power to the motors and bring the mobile rack to a controlled halt within a short distance
  • Emergency stop buttons are fitted to the front of each mobile racking system, with circuit breakers that protect the electrical circuits of each rack

Our Mobile Rack Inclusions

Each mobile racking system will include:

  • Stronger beams and uprights
  • Special end frames
  • Heavy-duty baseplates
  • Flexible back ties, allowing the racking to sway slightly when moving

The design of mobile storage racks is different to that of conventional static pallet racking, however, when it comes to controlling light seismic conditions, there are some similarities.
